Seyðisfjörður – city of greed and good fishing

Seyðisfjörður is a tourist attraction as well as a tourist trap. The prices are high no matter what you buy. Things do not have to be as expensive as they are, but who cares when the tourists don’t seem to care? Not the Icelanders…
Maybe we all should think twice before choosing our next vacation destination.

If you stay at the fairly decent campsite close to the center, either in a tent og campervan et cetera, and buy the food in the local store, you might be all right. But who want´s to live in a tent in a country that always has bad weather?

Nothing good to say about the city then? The surroundings, the setting of the city is absolutely amazing. But the many cruise ships are ruining the picture, Thousands of tourists, the pollution and the prices are what makes this otherwise wonder of an area, a bad experience.

+ The supposedly best restaurant in town, Aldan, is a good example of what is going on all over Iceland. Here I have felt treated like I was not welcome several times. I still came back to see if this was a one-, two- or three-time thing 4 years in a row. They wanted my money, but not me or anyone else as a costumer. A Get your shit and get out kind of thing. A horrible feeling to have as a costumer.

The harbor fishing and coast fishing is quite all right though. The same goes for the hiking routes in the area.

The fishing is for free. So far…

All good

Now I owe the city sport center a good word or two. The price for working out, spa and sauna is very fair. The service there is at toplevel. A light in the Financial active vulcano.

Adress: Suðurgata 5 – 710 Seyðisfjörður.

The harbour

Seyðisfjörður has a interesting harbor fishing wise. It is possible to catch quite big cod, whiting and haddock. The cod usually has a lot of worms in their meat.

It is also possible to catch flounders everywhere it is possible to fish.

Huge herring is also a possibility during the springtime and summer.

In spite of the fishing opportunities, it is not possible to buy any fishing equipment in the city? Come on!!! A money sucking city like yours. Got to do something about that.

Now I use spoons for most of my fishing in the fjord. But a simple rig with a heavy spoon 2 hooks and either mackerel or sand eel has proven rather efficient.

Make shure to fish at/on or near the bottom.

Seyðisfjörður fishing spots

These are the best spots for catching cod, whiting and haddock.

Please do not: Do not throw any trash, lines or hooks here or anywhere else. The birds will eat anything.

The best place for large haddock is here: Spot 1.
It is not possible to fish there in normal working hours. Go there in the evenings on weekdays or Saturday and Sunday.

This is a great spot for large and medium size cod: Spot 2.
Here you can fish all day long. Cod love you long time.

This is a great place for whiting, big cod and haddock: Spot 3.
It is not possible to fish there in normal working hours. Go there in the evenings on weekdays or Saturday and Sunday.

This is a great place for whiting, big cod and haddock: Spot 4.
It is not possible to fish there in normal working hours. Go there in the evenings on weekdays or Saturday and Sunday.

Always be watchful of the birds. They like spoons, fish bits and “flying low catching lines”.

The river Fjarðará

This is a lovely river which runs through the town of Seyðisfjörður. Fishing is permitted from the town and up to the waterfall Fjarðarselsfoss. Several nice pools is a part of this stretch of water.

It is possible to catch searun arctic char in medium sizes, and few searun browntrout and salmon during the season. It is not the greatest river in Iceland. Not even by a long shot, but it is what I would call a cozy river.

You can buy the fishing licence for the river in Aldan. (The restaurant who only likes your money)

Seyðisfjörður and the secret lake

A lake is to be found in the highlands of the area. It supposedly has huge char from 60-70 centimeters. Well it might still have, but how many are left. Not even the locals know.

It takes a few hours to hike there from the city. Depending on who you are.

here it is: A walk in the dark…

I wish you the best fishing alongside the banks of  Seyðisfjörður and what not…
